Cloudscapes:Events+Workshops for Adults - Anywhere Festival of Everywhere Stages with Liz Oakley

Join us Saturday March 21th to participate in the devising of small scale puppet productions led by Liz Oakley!

20200227_004512 - Liz Oakley.jpg

From Liz:::

15 people to make 5 stages smaller than 1 square foot, all within a single art studio... this is the (first ever!) Anywhere Festival of Everywhere Stages, a miniature site-specific performance extravaganza! It’s just like Coachella or the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, except it’s in one small room, the performers are puppets, and we’ll make everything ourselves. During the workshop from 3-5pm, participants will work in small groups to choose locations around The Painted Cloud in which to build & decorate a tiny stage (maximum dimension one square foot!). They will then use found and provided materials to create a short puppet or object performance specifically for their stage. Along the way, we will discuss principles of object puppetry, toy theater, scenic design, and site-responsive performance. At 5pm, we’ll invite additional audience into the space to attend the festival of tiny performances, moving from stage to stage to witness 3-minute shows. RSVP for the whole workshop (space is limited!) or just show up for the Festival at 5!  Light refreshments will be provided. But be warned… once you know that everywhere can be a stage, the world will never be the same.

From Ursula:::

We are going to sculpt sound and space through simple group actions. It’ll be fun—we will play inside of game structures that are designed to be negotiated (not executed flawlessly). These games involve real-time decisions about our relationships to space, each other, and the audience. We will explore, organize a performative structure, and take turns as audience members. And we’ll have time for a conversation to reflect on different approaches to navigation, participation, cooperation, and resistance.

Bio:

Sam Jay Gold is a puppeteer, theater artist, and filmmaker based in New York.

With the support of a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, Sam studied traditional forms of puppetry around the world. He trained in marionettes in the Czech Republic, Noh and Bunraku in Japan, and Wayang Kulit in Bali, while exploring empathy, imagination, and projection across the animate/inanimate divide. These experiences cemented Sam’s belief in the primal power of the puppet, of the shadow, of the not-quite-lifelike, as vessels for surprising, delighting, and challenging audiences with transformative storytelling.

Sam’s original work has been supported by the Jim Henson Foundation and featured at venues including St. Ann’s Warehouse, BAM, and the New York State Puppetry Festival. He has performed in shows at Lincoln Center, Mass MoCA, The Watermill Center, The Merry-Go-Round Theater, The Eugene O’Neill Theater, HERE Arts, and La MaMa, as well as toured works in France, Poland, and Indonesia.

 Sam is co-founder of The Brothers Campur, a Balinese/American shadow puppet company performing classic and contemporary Wayang Kulit throughout the US and Bali. His writings on theater and pu      ppetry have been featured in Bauhaus Magazine, Puppetry International, and Mime Journal.

When not performing, writing, or making new shows, Sam assists in puppet fabrication at AchesonWalsh Studios and works as a teaching artist at The New Victory Theatre, Lincoln Center Theater, and CO/LAB Theater Group, where he offers individuals with developmental disabilities a creative and social outlet through puppetry and other theater arts.

Cloudscapes:Events+Workshops for Adults - Video Party //\\ Experimental Abstract Video workshop

Join us Saturday November 9th for an inclusive and immersive experiment with analogue and digital video equipment!

Screen+Shot+2019-10-25+at+4.12.00+PM.jpg

Come get immersed in an abstract video wonderland! Artists Julian Bozeman and John Crowe will set up multiple pieces of analogue and digital video equipment throughout The Painted Cloud studio for all to use. Together we will create unpredictable abstract video. This is a unique opportunity for participants to get their hands on rare video equipment.

After a brief introduction from the artists, participants will have the opportunity to use an array of video equipment to create abstract video projections. Each piece of video equipment, ranging from cameras to mixers to colorizers and more, will feed into the final abstract product, which will be projected onto the wall. There will also be a performance station, where your simple and complex movements will be captured, transmitted, and transformed by the video equipment.

Cloudscapes:Events+Workshops for Adults - Crumpled Stuff //\\ Papier-mâché workshop

Join us this Saturday October 12th for the latest session of Nick DeMarco’s cardboard and papier-mâché workshop.... Crumpled Stuff!

A message from Nick::
Using simple techniques and dirt cheap or reused materials, I will help you build a funky li’l vessel of your own design. Papier-mâché is an often neglected medium, but it’s one of my all-time favorites to work with. Done correctly, it can be durable, expressive, beautiful and very eco-friendly.

All are welcome, regardless of a self-perceived lack of prior experience making things. if you participated in my previous session of Crumpled Stuff you’re welcome too! I’ll try to introduce some new techniques to seasoned mâché veterans.

if you plan on coming please

2) bring a medium sized plastic container of some kind. this will be the bones of your vessel, so choose wisely. a seltzer bottle, gallon milk jug, yogurt tub, to-go thing, etc. also plan on leaving with a wet object so bring a plastic bag to hold it. if you have extra brown grocery bags lying around please bring those as well to share with the group!
this is gonna be fun!!
